The 2009 Texas Book Festival chose SPD Austin again, for the sixth year in a row, to design all of the Festival materials, advertising, promotional items and signage. Each year, the Festival chooses one Texas artist to be the featured "look" of the event. In 2009, Keith Carter's work was selected by the Texas Book Festival board members to promote the festival. Susan Birkenmayer led the design team on the project. Susan says, "Because of the moody nature of Mr. Carter's black and white photography style, as well as the subject matter of his featured work "White Owl 2004," his work was a perfect match for the Festival which ran over Halloween weekend. We amplified the visual mystery by utilizing large areas of rich black, organic scripts and flourishes, and dull and gloss varnish techniques for added effect."

The Texas Book Festival was established in 1995 by then First Lady Laura Bush to honor Texas authors, promote the joys of reading and benefit the state's public libraries. Since then, the festival has grown to become one of the premier literary events in the country, annually hosting more than 200 Texas and nationally known authors. Sibley Peteet Design Austin is proud to have been a part of this important event since 2004.
